The Idaho Horse Board was created by legislative action in 1987.  The program became effective on July 1, 1988.  Funding for the Board's purpose is derived from the $3.00 fee attached to brand inspections for horses.  The fee is collected by the Idaho State Brand Inspector at the time a horse is brand inspected.  Seven board members are appointed by the Governor to represent a cross-section of all equine interests, including breeding, racing, competitive events, trail, and pleasure riding.  Funds collected are given in the form of grants to further equine interests in PROMOTION, RESEARCH, and EDUCATION.  Grant requests must be received by December 1 each year at the Board office to be reviewed and awarded in January each year.  Contact the IHB office for grant request forms.
